As we approach the end of another half term, I want to take a moment to express my thanks for your ongoing support and collaboration. It has been a privilege to witness the support you have shown the school and our students during the start to a busy exam period.
The next term will also be a busy time, starting with both the Art Exhibition and the Midsummer Fun Run on the 20th June 2024.
We have recently opened our registration for the entrance test for Year 7 entry in September 2025. We are holding our annual open evening on Thursday 27th June 2024 from 5:15pm to 7:30pm.
Please note that we will close for the half term break on Friday 24th May and we will reopen on Monday 3rd June 2024.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award During May, three former students attended the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Celebration at Buckingham Palace.
Over the past 10 years we have seen more than 750 Awards at Bronze, Silver and Gold level presented to students at LGGS and the take up at Bronze and Gold level continues to grow. This May and June will see more than 90 Year 10 students complete their Bronze qualifying expedition and over 20 Year 12 students will be traversing the east side of the Lake District for their Gold qualifying expedition.

Lancashire Athletics Gold
Isla Roberts in Year 10 competed in the 2024 Lancashire Athletics Track and Field Competition in Blackpool, which was held last weekend. Isla won Gold in the U17W Triple Jump and Silver in the U17W High Jump. An amazing achievement.
Year 12 Work Experience
Last week saw our Year 12 students taking part in work experience placements. This week-long immersion into the professional world offered them invaluable insights and lessons that will undoubtedly shape their future career decisions.
Entering a professional environment for the first time will, in many cases, have been intimidating; however, the positive feedback from employers in a range of professions clearly shows that the students were confident and able to manage the many challenges they faced during the week. As you can see from the images below, this practical exposure was eye-opening and immensely educational for the Year 12, bridging the gap between classroom learning and professional application.
Throughout the placements, our students have had the chance to develop a range of essential skills. These experiences will have made them more confident in their own abilities and have provided a solid foundation for their future career paths. We look forward to hearing more about their experiences over the next few weeks and sharing more photographs of their work.
2024 Music Festival
During assemblies this week, Iona Munford (Assistant Head Student for Music) and Mr Swannell promoted the 2024 Music Festival.
Each year, Year 7 to 10 students are encouraged to work alongside our sixth formers to represent their houses and create student-led performances, through different categories, such as Choir, Orchestra, Novelty and Year 7 Ensemble.
The festival, which showcases the talents of our amazing students, results in an impressive day and evening of music and is always one of highlights of the school year.
This year’s festival will take place on Wednesday 17th July 2024 in school. Families and friends will be invited to attend a repeat performance in the evening. Details for this will go out next half term, but, in the meantime, please save the date!
Geography Field Visit
Earlier this month, our Year 12 Geographers undertook a field visit up to Easedale Tarn to explore glaciated landscapes out in the field. This allowed the students to see the impressive U-shaped valleys, drumlins and roche moutonnées along the way, as well as getting to analyse glacial till to understand the nature of glacial deposits.
Anthea Bell Translation Winner
We are delighted that Catherine Townley in Year 13 has been selected as the winner for the North West in the Anthea Bell Translation Competition, for her age category. The competition is run by The Queen’s College, Oxford.
Over 16,000 students participated in the prize in 2024 and over 3,600 entries were judged, so this is a fantastic achievement. Catherine’s story is even more remarkable as her translation was from Spanish into English and she has only been studying the language for two years. She is sitting her A Levels in both French and Spanish and we are sure that many linguistic and cultural adventures await her in her next chapter. Well done!
Lit Fest Winners … second year in a row!
LGGS has won the Lancashire Lit Fest Big Read Competition for a second year in a row! The challenge this year was to read the book Tyger by S.F. Said and create a 50-word review recommending it to a friend.
Auguste Sarakauskaite in Year 10 has come joint first place with a pair of students from another local school.
‘I think there are two outstanding entries, both of which are very creative and engaging videos.’ S.F. Said.
Auguste will be taking home 3 paperback books of her choice. Her efforts have also won £125 in books for our school Library. Many congratulations and thank you to Auguste!

We also have a winner for the random prize draw. This year, we entered 53 students who had all read the book into the Lit Fest prize draw. Anabiya Taroob in Year 7 is a lucky winner! She too can choose 3 paperback books of her choice. Many congratulations, Anabiya!
Our Year 9 students were able to ask lots of questions in an extended Q&A session, as well as hearing a talk all about her writing process and how the ‘Powerless’ series came to be.
With some big fans in the audience and plenty of new fans by the end of the talk, it is safe to say that our students were thrilled to have the opportunity to speak with such a remarkable 21-year-old author.
Bake sales
Well done to the Year 12 students who organised a delicious bake sale yesterday to raise money for mental health charity Young Minds. The students also provided recipe details for anyone wishing to recreate the cakes at home!

Earth Day Library Letter Hunt Competition
Well done to Kanmani for all of the hard work she has put in to her Pupil Librarian Gold Award project! Celebrating Earth Day and climate fiction (cli-fi), Kanmani’s booklet of puzzles has been available for students to take part in for two weeks.
