Weekly Update

13th May 2024

Message from the Headteacher

We held our first Parents and Friends meeting this half-term. It was wonderful to meet the parents who have very kindly offered their support. The group will be sharing some more information and arranging another meeting shortly.

Although this half-term will be short, it will also be one of the busiest. GCSE exams are well underway and the A-level exams will be starting this week. Our Year 12 students have just returned from their Duke of Edinburgh Gold practice and have now started Work Experience.

We hope you enjoyed last week’s Summer Showtime music concert, a wonderful opportunity to listen to our very talented young musicians and choirs. You are now able to register online to take part in our annual Supper Run which will take place on Thursday 20th June.

We have been incredibly impressed with the attitude and dedication that Year 11 have shown as GCSE exams have started. Please remember our staff are available should you need any support.

We also wish our Year 13 students – who left for study leave last Friday – all the very best with their exams. As a year group, they have been an inspiration to all our students, offering time, support and initiatives that have benefitted the whole school community. I hope that in turn, they reap the rewards of their hard work and dedication.

Positive News

On 30th April, a team of Year 10 students travelled south to take part in the ‘PA Raspberry Pi Finals‘ which were held at Google’s London offices. The annual competition is a celebration of STEM education, giving schoolchildren the tools and opportunity to invent products that can benefit society using engineering and coding skills and a Raspberry Pi micro-computer.

First there was an escape room challenge, with a focus on the impact of disability in team management, as the theme this year was ‘health’. Our cracking coders invented a device which would allow carers, and those they care for, a little more independence.

It must have been nerve-wracking to present to such a large group, but our team remained confident and passionate throughout and went on to win the ‘Innovation Award’ for the Year 10-11 category. Congratulations to all who represented the school, they should be really proud of their achievement.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Mental Health Awareness Week is organised by the Mental Health Foundation. This year, the theme is ‘Movement: moving more for our mental health.’ We know that movement and exercise can protect and build our mental wellbeing, boost our mood, and help us look after our health. Now that summer is here it will encourage us all to be more active.

Here are a few ideas to get all of our students thinking about looking after themselves:
‘Being Kind to Yourself’ wellbeing activities.

You will also find a Mental Heath Factsheet produced by UCL and the Anna Freud Centre to help young people better understand the facts and figures around mental health, and how to access support.

Midsummer Supper Run

Online registration is now open for our Midsummer Supper Run which takes place on Thursday 20th June. The event is open to all and this year we are also looking for willing volunteers to help out on the night.

The aim of the event is to raise money for our PE Department – enabling us to facilitate an inspiring and empowering Sports Week event for students across a range of different year groups.

As a result of last year’s successful run, during Sports Week the money enabled us to invite Lancaster Bulldogs – wheelchair basketball coaching team, Parkour Company Street Monkeys and an international Fencing specialist in to school to offer whole year group coaching sessions to Key Stage 3 students!

If you are free on Thursday 20th June and willing to help between 6.30- 8.30pm – in return for a chip butty – please email: l.sharples@lggs.lancs.sch.uk

Charity Bake Sale

Well done to Form 10.4 who organised a delicious Bake Sale in aid of two charities: Cancer Research and the World Wildlife Fund.

Lancaster University Link – Lecture Series Continues

Last week, we welcomed Dr Brian Black to school. As a Senior Lecturer at Lancaster University’s ‘Politics, Philosophy and Religion’ department, Dr Black spoke to Year 10-13 students on the topic of ‘The First Women Philosophers’. He also discussed how our students could make a difference to the future of philosophical debate.

Future First

We are inviting all Year 13 students, as soon-to-be alumnae, to sign up to Future First.

The Future First platform is an excellent way to catch up with friends, receive school updates, and access a network of fellow alumnae, an invaluable resources as you progress in your careers.

Crucially, the platform also allows you to share details of your personal and career successes with the wider school community, acting as a source of inspiration for our current students and showcasing what fantastic opportunities await them at the end of their time at LGGS.

Period Product Scheme

The ‘Period Product Scheme’ provides free period products for students at their place of study. Period products should be available for all who need them, when they need them, so they can access education. Having periods should not be a barrier to education for anyone.

Thank you to Edie, Nova, Renay, Serena, Shaelynn and Sophia in Year 10, who have been busy unpacking and handing out products to our students today.

Young Muslims and Mental Health

‘We understand young people and know that growing up can naturally lead to questions about identity and beliefs.’ Kooth

Kooth’s mission is to help young people from all faiths and cultures make sense of themselves through this journey and to provide welcoming and inclusive support for all by respecting and being curious about what matters to them.

“Research suggests Muslims face some of the greatest mental health inequalities, yet too many encounter significant barriers to support.” Centre for Mental Health, 2023
