Weekly Update

30th April 2024

Message from the Headteacher

Our German Exchange visitors returned home safely last Wednesday. Thank you to the students and families who hosted our visitors, for making them feel so welcome and ensuring they benefited from the visit.

We recently launched our new look website. We hope this is easier to navigate and will also help keep you up to date with the latest news and events here at LGGS. There are still some pages in development and these will be launched shortly.

Both Art and MFL speaking exams continue this week. We would all like to wish our students well and remind them that there is support in place should anyone experience exam stress.

Northern Trains have announced that there will be strike action next week. Please find details about how this may affect travel below.

Social Media
We are now active on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. Please follow, like and share to keep up to date.

Positive News

BBC Young Journalist of the Year competition
Congratulations to Marianna Ward in Year 11 who entered the ‘BBC Young Journalist of the Year’ competition.

She was interviewed over the weekend by the BBC’s Young Reporter Editorial Lead who told her, that due to the topic of her report being quite unique, it had caught the eye of the judges and she has therefore passed two rounds of shortlisting!

Curling Success
During the Easter holidays, Marianna Ward took part in the English Junior Women’s Curling Championships 2024 as part of Team WODMAK. The other team provided great competition over the weekend and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the event. Team WODMAK managed to win and will go on to represent England in the World Junior B Curling Championships in Finland once again this December.

North West Regional Dance Competition
Our Key Stage 3 dancers are runners up of the North West regionals and through to the National Finals of the Great Big Dance Off 2024!

We are so proud of our sixth form choreographers and talented dancers, well done.

Northern Train Services Strike Action

As a result of ASLEF strike action, Northern services will not operate on Thursday 9th May.

Additional disruption is expected between bank holiday Monday on the 6th May up until Saturday 11th May – due to action, short of a strike.

We’re encouraging customers to check before they travel if they’re travelling with Northern or another train operator, as industrial action may affect multiple parts of their journey. Some Northern services are expected to be very busy on routes shared with other train operators.

Regularly updated information about the industrial action is available on their website: northernrailway.co.uk/strikes

Year 7 Fundraising for Mind UK

A group of Year 7 students, lead by Lydia and Zahraa, raised £56.72 for Mind UK by selling their handmade jewellery and crochet gifts in the Library at lunchtime last week.

We are very proud of the tremendous effort and kindness of the students who spent hours creating a beautiful selection of craft items for charity. The crochet ducks with hats and bumble bees went down especially well with students!

Cancer Care

Well done to Arwa Mahmood in Year 7 who recently took part in a Cancer Care appeal to create crochet birds for an upcoming walking challenge. The challenge which aims to promote conversation about cancer is called ‘A little bird told me’.
