Message from the Headteacher

I hope you had a relaxing half-term break and that our GCSE and A-level students are feeling refreshed as they continue with their exams. I would just like to remind parents and carers that although Year 11 students only need to come into school for exams, we have set aside rooms for them to revise in should they prefer to be in school rather than revise alone at home.

We look forward to meeting Year 12 parents and carers at tonight’s Parents Evening. This will be a good opportunity to discuss the recent mock exams and work experience placements.

Tickets are available for Thursday evening’s ‘LGGS Young Musician of the Year Grand Final’, featuring our amazingly talented Year 7-13 students. The event is open to families and friends so please join us from 6.30pm-8.00pm on 6th June. Tickets are free but they do need to be booked in advance to avoid disappointment, as seating in the Main Hall is limited.

I hope you have your trainers ready as it is time to register for our annual 4K Midsummer Supper Run, which is open to all. The run will be in support of LGGS Sports Week and, as mentioned previously, we are also looking for volunteers. If you are free on Thursday 20th June and are willing to help between 6.30- 8.30pm (in return for a chip butty) please email: l.sharples@lggs.lancs.sch.uk

Art Exhibition

We hope you can join us for our annual art exhibition which will be held in our Art department on 20th June from 4.30-6.30pm. Entrance is via Queen Street.

The exhibition is open to all year groups and their families. You will be amazed by the talent of our GCSE and A-level students. 

Positive News

Standfast & Barracks’ Centenary Design Competition Winner

We are delighted to announce that Neekee Taherian has been selected as one of three winners in the College/Sixth Form category of the Standfast & Barracks Centenary Design competition! To celebrate Neekee’s involvement in the competition, a length of her artwork will be printed onto fabric and displayed at school.
Due to the massive response to the competition, Standfast are hoping to organise a display of all the entries in the near future.  

‘We loved the detail and skill Neekee showed in her designs and the variation in design development. We liked how Neekee thought about the repeat structure of her design to celebrate some of the decorative architectural elements of the 1920s era. We can’t wait to put it into repeat! To celebrate her involvement in our Centenary, we will send a length with her artwork printed onto fabric!’ Standfast & Barracks 

Standfast have an exhibition currently on at the City Museum in Lancaster about their history, textile printing methods and the design of their fabrics.

Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award Expedition

Some of our Year 12 students went on their DofE Gold Award expedition. They walked to the stunning viewpoint at the top of Malham Cove, and enjoyed some very delicious looking s’mores! 

Lancashire Book of the Year

Our Lancashire Book of the Year (LBOY) judging group met up at the end of last half-term to discuss the books they have read so far and take part in activities to prepare them for judging. Three of our students have gone the extra mile in reading almost all 12 books, and are trying to squeeze in the last few before the voting deadline!

We are looking forward to attending the LBOY Awards Ceremony in July, where our judging group will meet the shortlisted authors!

Geography Field Trip

Our geographers were back on Morecambe beach, but this time it was the turn of our Year 10 students!

The students were gathering data and practising methodology for a future case study, measuring the distribution of sediment along the beach, and investigating the impact of tourism on the area.

Marketing Career Talk

Thank you to Ash Robinson, who came in from Lancaster and Morecambe College to deliver a talk to Year 10 students about T-Levels and local labour market information.

Our students gained a much greater understanding of what T-Levels are, and are now also aware of the high number of marketing and advertising career opportunities available in the area. 

Financially motivated sexual extortion

All schools in the UK have recently been sent information from the National Crime Agency, raising awareness of the recent rise in reporting of financially motivated sexual extortion (a type of online blackmail often known in the media as ‘sextortion’). Children and young people worldwide are being targeted.

This type of crime involves an adult offender (often from an organised crime group based overseas) threatening to release nude or semi-nude images and/or videos of a child or young person, unless they pay money, or meet another financial demand, such as purchasing a pre-paid gift card.
Victims of any age and gender can be targets, however, a large proportion of cases have involved victims aged 14-18.
A child or young person is never to blame if they have been a victim. Offenders will have tricked, groomed and/or manipulated them into sharing an image.

Music Festival

Music Festival rehearsals are now underway with House Captains meeting to discuss ideas with those who have volunteered to take part. The Music Festival takes place on Wednesday 17th July and we shall keep you informed about ticket availability for the evening performances.

Respecting and Celebrating Diversity

To mark the beginning of Pride Month, this week’s assemblies explored its history and reflected on its vital role in bringing communities together in support of diversity, inclusion, and equality.
