Year 7 Information Evening

A reminder for all Year 7 parents and carers that our Year 7 Information Evening will be held this Thursday, 9th October at 5:30pm. We will be sharing information about the academic year ahead, expectations, and the day to day life of your child at LGGS. We look forward to seeing you there!

Lake District Geography Trip

Last week our Year 9 students went to the Lake District to survey the impact of tourism on Ambleside and Bowness. They made notes on the use of each area, number of tourists, and then asked visitors and local residents questions about how they feel tourism impacts the Lake District.

Y12 A-Level Geography – Lancaster BID Q&A session

Tom Fyson from Lancaster BID recently delivered a session for Year 12 A-Level Geography students as part of the ‘Changing Places’ topic of their course, focusing on place marketing in Lancaster.

Tom covered topics such as what place marketing is, discussing strategies used to promote Lancaster to residents, visitors, investors, and businesses. He also went into depth on Lancaster BID’s role in enhancing Lancaster’s appeal through events such as the upcoming Lancaster Live Music weekend, branding, business support, and public relations improvements.

The talk introduced students to event planning and the career pathways in Marketing and Communications, as well as covering issues around urban planning and regeneration.

Year 12 Geography Trip to Liverpool

As part of the A-Level Geography ‘Changing Places’ module, our Year 12 students visited Liverpool to explore its multicultural character as our designated ‘Distant Place’. The trip included visits to key religious and cultural landmarks such as the Catholic Cathedral, a synagogue, an Orthodox church, and the Nigeria Centre, offering insights into the city’s diverse communities. We also examined the historical role of Liverpool’s docks in shaping its multicultural identity, highlighting how global trade and migration have contributed to the rich cultural tapestry of the city. The experience deepened our understanding of how a place is shaped by people, history, and global connections.

For Parents – A Guide to Navigating Social Media Safely

This is a fantastic guide from the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH). It goes into lots of detail and I’m sure parents will find it interesting and useful. The guide goes into areas such as:

  • How social media platforms and algorithms operate.
  • The various types of harms that children may experience.
  • Practical advice and guidance.
  • Supporting resources.

Student News

7 students represented LGGS in the English Schools Fell running championship at Sedbergh this weekend. All runners gave great performances in a highly competitive field. A special mention to Scarlet (Year 7) , Sienna (Year 9) and Emily (Year 12) who all finished in the top 20 in their races.

Work Experience Review – EDF Heysham 2 Power Station

I recently completed a three-day placement with EDF at Heysham 2 Power Station, where I gained practical experience, developed technical skills, and expanded my understanding of nuclear energy and engineering.

Firstly, I enjoyed a comprehensive tour of the power station and introduction to emergency procedures, which underlined the responsibility involved in working in the nuclear industry. The whole placement was varied, and I had the opportunity to work across several departments. I was involved in various checks which were essential processes to maintain operational safety and efficiency. I also assisted with transformer oil sampling, battery voltage checks, and the inspection of valves for corrosion or damage before cleaning or replacing parts where needed.

I particularly valued the opportunity to spend time with current apprentices, who shared their experiences with me. Their friendliness and support created a really welcoming environment and provided a realistic outlook on both the challenges and rewards of the role. My supervisor also discussed future opportunities, reinforcing EDF’s strong career development prospects and career pathways.

This placement has been highly rewarding, giving me a true insight into the industry and inspiring me to pursue a future career in engineering. I left Heysham 2 with not only enhanced skills and knowledge, but also a greater appreciation of the professional standards and dedication required to work in the energy sector.

We have a growing Alumnae network and, as a reminder, you are able to keep in touch with school, each other and receive our termly Alumnae newsletter by signing up to Future First.

Our Alumnae also provide support to our current students through talks, mentoring or offering work experience. Further along your career path, this may be something that you wish to be involved with.
