Message from the Headteacher

I would firstly like to start by wishing Ramadan Mubarak to those families who are celebrating at this time of year.

I would also like to say thank you to those families who have hosted exchange students from Spain and France over the last couple of weeks. It has been a pleasure to hear how the exchange experience has benefited our language students, and has also provided them with cultural insights. I am sure some lifelong friendships will have been developed from the exchange.

We look forward to welcoming Year 11 parents tomorrow evening to talk about the final preparations and hard work ahead of the forthcoming GCSE exams.

We are setting aside optional after-school sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays for Year 11 to have the space to complete past papers in exam conditions in addition to the continuing subject sessions.

Positive News

National Biathlon Qualifiers
Congratulations to Sophie and Yarah who recently competed at the National Biathlon qualifiers. This involved running 800m on an athletics track and swimming 50m in a 25m pool. Sophie and Yarah beat competitors from all over the country to finish 7th and 3rd respectively in the Year 7 girls’ category. They have both now been selected for the Nationals in a few weeks and we wish them luck.

Year 9 District Netball Tournament
Well done to the Year 9 Netball team who finished third overall in the District Netball tournament held at Ripley. They showed true grit and determination, supporting each other throughout all 5 games.

Sixth Form Video

Well done to everyone who contributed towards our new Sixth Form video.

World Book Day

World Book Day is an important day in terms of literacy and raising the profile of reading but last week we celebrated not just World Book Day itself but a whole week of events organised by our Library staff. These included students dressing up as dystopian characters from their favourite book, cooking and decorating dystopian themed cakes and even decorating form doors or entering a quizz.  Staff also joined in, disguising themselves as masked readers or acting in the annual staff play.

So far, we have raised £194.50 for Book Aid International and our Bake Off competition raised an impressive £185.94 for Book Trust UK!

Neurodivergence and Girls

Last week, teaching and pastoral staff received specialist training from the ADHD Foundation. The session, which covered both ADHD and autism, was focussed on issues faced by neurodiverse girls and emphasised that such differences should be actively celebrated. Many who have achieved great success in life are neurodiverse and it is precisely their differences which have helped drive their success.

International Women’s Day

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we welcomed Dr Jane Caborn to LGGS on Friday. Dr Caborn delivered an inspiring talk to Key Stage 4 and 5 students about her career in science, the importance of nuclear power, and energy security. It was especially fascinating to hear her discuss her role in tracing polonium-210 when the Russian exile, Alexander Litvinenko, was poisoned in London in 2006. There were many great questions from the audience and it was clear that many scientists of the future are beginning their journey here at LGGS!

Easter Egg Appeal

Year 12 students are organising an Easter Egg collection at school, in conjunction with the Olive Branch charity. The charity supports local families who are struggling and we are inviting students, from all year groups, to contribute towards this appeal. The eggs will be collected from today until Thursday 21st March.

Bake Sale in Support of UNICEF

Well done to Anise and Form 9.2 for organising a Bake Sale today in support of United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF).
UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories and aims to build a better world for every child.  They work to save children’s lives, defend their rights and to help them fulfil their potential, from early childhood through to adolescence.
They are also the world’s largest provider of vaccines, and promote equal rights for women and girls.
