It was wonderful to see the whole school community coming together last Thursday to contribute, produce and support such a high standard of performance for our annual Performing Arts Festival.
This has been, as ever, led entirely by the students in Year 12 and has showcased the talents of a great number of students across the school. They all worked so hard and with such creativity throughout November to put together the fantastic shows we saw last Thursday, and although there was very much a competitive spirit in the air on the day, as each house did their utmost to wow the judges, what shone through was what a fantastic time everyone was having, working together and cheering each other on. We could not run this event without the extraordinary leadership of our Year 12 students.
Thank you to everyone who attended and we look forward to welcoming you back for next year’s festival.
There are so many things going on in school in December, so we have put together a Festive Countdown so that you can see what is happening when, and all the different charities that we are supporting in different ways.
The Sixth Form students have been busy collecting festive shoeboxes in support of Safenet Lancaster, I am sure their efforts will be appreciated and don’t forget Festive Jumper Day on Thursday 7th December. For those who wish to take part there is a suggested donation of £2 in aid of Save the Children (can be paid on Parent Pay). Students will be able to come to school in non-uniform.
We will close for the holiday on Friday 22nd December 2023 at 1pm.
Positive News
GCHQ CyberFirst Girls Competition This competition, which is a team event, aims to inspire girls interested in technology to pursue a career in cyber security. Each team, consisting of up to four Year 8 students who tackle challenges from cryptography and logic to artificial intelligence and networking – cracking codes and solving puzzles. Congratulations to the LGGS ‘Computing Carrots’, who came first out of 7 student teams in the National Cyber Security Centre’s ‘CyberFirst Girls Competition’ school heat.
Exhibiting at the Storey Gallery Congratulations to Year 7 student, Anuhya, who will have two sketches and two paintings displayed at an art exhibition which will be held at the Storey Gallery, Lancaster between 7th – 21st December. The exhibition is the 7th Annual Art Fair of ‘King Street Arts’ and Anuhya is the youngest exhibitor to display artwork at their exhibition. I am sure there will be a lot of LGGS interest in supporting the event.

Due to recent travel disruption in the local area, please could we ask that you familiarise yourself with our ‘Unavoidable School Closure‘ policy which is published on our website.
Gardening and Conservation Club
We received 210 tree saplings from the Woodland Trust, and over the last two weeks members of the Gardening and Conservation clubs, along with the newly formed Eco-Committee, have been planting lots of them.
So far, we have added a hedgerow/screening at the bottom of Pear Tree Gardens, created a hedgerow between existing trees on the playing field and started a collection of berry-bearing trees on another part of the playing field. We will complete our tree planting next Thursday by planting the remaining trees in ‘the school pond field’.
A massive thank you to all the pupils involved so far: Sophie, Yuk, Tasha, Hazel, Lyla and Izzy and an advance thank you to those who have helped with the last planting. A huge thank you also to Mrs Stevens, who in addition to the planting has prepared lots of tree protectors, and the members of the Fairfield Association who have shared their time and knowledge.

Uniform and appearance
As we head towards the end of the term we have noticed that some students are needing reminders about our expectation for uniform and appearance. We will start to contact home next week for those who require repeated reminders.
One area that has required reminders this week has been around skirt length for main school students. As a reminder, skirts should not be rolled up and should be knee length. This means that the bottom of the skirt should touch the top of kneecap when standing. Please can you support us by ensuring that your child has the correct length skirt. We do have spare skirts in school for students to borrow if needed.

Northern Railway Industrial Action
As a result of ASLEF strike action, Northern services will not operate on Friday 8 December.
Additional disruption is expected between 1 – 9 December due to action short of a strike called by ASLEF. Northern Railway wish to let customers know what this means for travel and are encouraging customers to plan ahead if they intend travelling with Northern or connecting onto other services across the country – as industrial action may affect multiple parts of their journey. Some Northern services are expected to be very busy on routes shared with other train operators.
Congratulations to Mrs Singleton who has been appointed Head of Year 11. Mrs Singleton will be working alongside Mr Green to support Year 11 students throughout the academic year.
Sadly we will be saying farewell to Ms Hodgkinson, who is unfortunately leaving LGGS in the new year. Ms Hodgkinson has made a valuable contribution to LGGS in the time that she has been with us, and we wish her well in her future career.
We will be welcoming Mr G Davies-Craine as Head of Geography at LGGS in January.
Work experience
Work Experience Week for Year 12 students is planned for the week beginning 13th May 2024.
We are committed to all our students having the best possible opportunities during Work Experience week, not just those who already have a good network of contacts, so we are reaching out to the entire LGGS community to ask if you would be happy for one of our Year 12 students to spend a week in the place where you work.
Our students have a diverse range of interests and aspirations, and we are hoping to be able to match that with the placements we are able to offer them.
Please complete this form if you are able to facilitate a placement for one or more of our students, and please pass this on to anyone in your wider network of friends or colleagues if you think that they may be able to help.
On behalf of our Year 12 students, we would like to thank you for considering this request: we intend that this programme will become a regular part of the Year 12 calendar for many years to come so that all LGGS students can have this enriching opportunity.
Holiday Activities and Food Programme
If you are eligible for benefits-related free school meals, you can get a place on the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF)! This takes place during the Christmas Holidays for 4 days (most likely taking place between the 2nd and 5th January). You can check out further details on the website for your district.
