Message from the Headteacher

Welcome back to the start of a new half term, I hope you and your family managed to enjoy the break.

With the clocks going back earlier this week, we are now heading into darker mornings and evenings. For many students this will mean travelling or walking home in the dark. 

Last half term we spoke about personal safety with all students, and we would encourage you to have another conversation about the journeys to and from school and plans for delayed buses or trains.

This week we are looking forward to welcoming prospective Sixth Form students as we hold our open evening on Thursday. We also have visits to the Theatre to see Blood Brothers and some of our Sixth Formers are flying out to Japan to present at the Japanese Science Fair.

Positive News

Well done to Madison in Year 12 who was awarded a prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship.

Congratulations as well to Aibhlin in Year 7 who was awarded the Under 13 girls’ Athlete of the day at the recent sports hall event where she represented Preston Harriers Athletics Club. Aibhlin will go on to represent the Lancashire team in the regional finals.

Year 12 Work Experience Week: How can you help?

Work Experience Week for Year 12 students will take place in the week beginning 13th May 2024.

We are committed to all our students having the best possible opportunities during Work Experience week, not just those who already have a good network of contacts, so we are reaching out to the entire LGGS community to ask if you would be happy for one of our Year 12 students to spend a week in the place where you work.

Our students have a diverse range of interests and aspirations, and we are hoping to be able to match that with the placements we are able to offer them.

Please complete this form if you are able to facilitate a placement for one or more of our students.

On behalf of our Year 12 students, we would like to thank you for considering this request: we intend that this programme will become a regular part of the Year 12 calendar for many years to come so that all LGGS students can have this enriching opportunity.

Sixth Form Open Evening

Our Sixth Form Open Evening is taking place on Thursday 2nd November from 5:30 – 7:30pm.

This is a great opportunity to see what is on offer at our amazing Sixth Form

There will be tours of the school, a chance to talk to different course teachers and a talk from members of our Sixth Form Leadership team and Ms Dobson, Head of Sixth Form.

We shall look forward to welcoming you on the 2nd. Register your interest in attending here.

Prayers during the winter period

We have recently received a number of enquiries from students asking to be let out of lessons early to pray. 

Whilst we appreciate that the clocks going back makes it more difficult for some students to pray before sunset, especially when there are long journeys home, it is also important that learning time is not impacted. 

LGGS wants to ensure that religious obligations are not compromised and remains committed to respecting and celebrating all faiths. However, the impact on students missing valuable teaching time as well as others needs to be balanced. 

The current prayer space provided is available to students to utilise at social times and after school at their convenience. We are also currently working to try and improve these facilities for all students. 

Where time and space permits, teachers will also allow students to pray at the end of the day in the classroom. This will allow students the opportunity to offer prayers without having to access the prayer room and thereby save time for those wanting to catch the bus or train. For those not affected, they are more than welcome to use the prayer room as usual.

Parents are encouraged to discuss and understand the above and make provisions that work best for them. This includes praying before leaving school, when they reach home (when time allows) and/or making up prayers on occasions when time does not permit. 

Governor recruitment

We are currently recruiting for Co-opted Governors and would particularly welcome applications from people with experience in finance, legal, buildings, health and safety or project management.
