As the end of term draws to a close I would like to extend my gratitude to staff, students, parents and carers. It has been a busy term and I hope that you have enjoyed reading about the many events and activities which have taken place.
We hope you will join us tonight to celebrate the talent of our Physical Education students for the Dance Gymnastics Showcase evening which will take place this evening at 6.30pm in the Main Hall. Tickets: £3 for adults and £1.50 for students and children. Tickets available online.
Meanwhile, the LGGS Young Musician of the Year 2024 competition launched today. The junior rounds are taking place at lunch time throughout the week and senior rounds will commence after Easter. We have over seventy entries this year, which is amazing! What better way to spend a lunch time than be treated to a free concert.
I hope you all have a restful break and I shall be looking forward to all the amazing things our students achieve during the summer term.
Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Training Day Ninety two Students took part in a Bronze DofE Training Day with instructors from HighPoints. The day included workshops on route planning, equipment, tents and outdoor cooking, and they also spent half a day on a navigation training walk. The instructors were very impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, despite the very wet weather!
Netball Glasgow Tour ‘We started off the weekend with a very exciting coach journey to Glasgow (the coach had its own kitchen!) with a sing song and quiz, where the Year 11s thrashed the PE department. We arrived at the sports centre and met two of the Strathclyde Sirens’ players, Sammy Ngubane and Towera Vinkhumbo, who were absolutely brilliant and taught us about defence and attack. The Sirens are Scotland’s only professional netball team and they soon had us trying all the different techniques ourselves, which was incredibly helpful and constructive. We then hopped back on the coach and got to the hotel, checked into our rooms. After dinner, we played some board games with the PE department – absolutely hilarious. Saturday was a very full day we went to the sports centre and split into 3 teams and played against each other, then after some lunch we headed to watch the Sirens vs Maverick game at the Emirates Stadium where we got a shoutout! It was amazing to see the standard of playing. Later on we headed to bowling with Mrs Russell and on Sunday morning, we finished off with some more coaching from two of the Sirens’ players, one of whom had been given Player of the match the previous day, followed by doing a Q and A with the players, which was the highlight of the trip for us. Overall, there was not a dull moment on this trip, we cannot speak highly enough of it, informative, organised and a great laugh.’ Amy
Year 7 and 8 Athletics Championships
A trip to Blackpool today for our athletes to compete in the Lancashire Indoor Athletics Championships. Everyone gave their all to achieve a fantastic 3rd for the Year 7s and 8th for the Year 8s; in the whole of Lancashire!

Careers Fair
Last Wednesday, we took Year 9 students to University of Central Lancashire for a Careers Fair. Students browsed the stalls and talked to local employers, such as James Hall & Co. They were provided with information about the range of courses offered by higher education institutions in the Northwest, such as Liverpool John Moors University and University of Cumbria, and learned about public sector career paths, such as with the NHS and the Royal Marines.
University of Cambridge Conference
Last week, thirty of our Year 12 students experienced a fantastic day at the University of Cambridge Northwest Student Conference at Haydock Park. Students had the chance to experience lectures, find out about interview techniques and tips from Cambridge students and academics, and to learn about life at Cambridge. The day definitely got them fired up for the next steps.
Chemistry
Year 11 enjoyed working together to build their own model of poly(ethene) during their Chemistry lesson. Each student made a section of the string which they joined together to represent how they are used in plastics.
Business Ethics Workshop
Is business good or evil, moral or immoral? Such questions, although arising daily in all public spheres, remain as frustrating as ever in their refusal to open up to an answer. Formulated in this way, they remain stubbornly circular and divisive. This meeting brings to the debates about the ethics of business, for the first time, two thinkers who have neither written about business, nor were conventional philosophers of ethics: Friedrich Nietzsche and Martin Heidegger. Yet both provide analyses of modernity that allow us to think about the way in which business has become the defining expression of the spirit of our age. Through them, we return to fundamental questions that are prior to any judgement about the morality or ethics of business. What is the character and place of business in our understanding of ourselves and of the world? What is the relationship between business, freedom and the manner in which we claim the power to bestow value upon the world? Is the endless production of ‘goods’ and ‘goodness’ as such really possible?
Our exciting RS event last Wednesday was an A-Level Business Ethics workshop for Year 12 Religious Studies Students.
LGGS Alumnae Talks for Year 10-13 Students
Effective Study for a person with ADHD Anouk Waller-Sargent, who left LGGS in 2021 and is now studying History at Cambridge University, came to talk to our students on Wednesday about effective study skills for a person with ADHD. Anouk gave a brilliant account of strategies she has developed since receiving her diagnosis, sharing her tips regarding procrastination, organisation and essay writing. She also celebrated the very many positives of neurodiversity including creativity, innovation, drive, passion and a strong capacity for solving problems.
Life as a Junior Doctor Charlotte Fletcher was Head Girl at LGGS from 2015-2016 and we are very grateful to her for coming in to school yesterday to share her experiences and insights into her journey through medical school, and her life as a junior doctor.

With the Easter break approaching, at Kooth Digital Health we appreciate there will be some young people who may struggle during the holidays without the access to the daily pastoral support, teaching staff and friends that the school community provides.
Kooth offers free and anonymous therapeutic mental health and wellbeing support to young people. Funded and endorsed by public health and the NHS, our services remain available over the Easter period, offering ‘on the day’ wellbeing support from the comfort of your own home, via any web-enabled device.
Kooth also offers free access to online text-based practitioner chats, self-help tools and activities, journal spaces and advice from our non-judgemental, safe and moderated peer to peer communities.
With no threshold, waiting list or referral process, young people from the age of 10 – 19 in Lancashire and 11 – 18 in Cumbria, can access support for ANY issues they may be experiencing. These may include body image, self-esteem, loneliness, bereavement, academic pressures, stress, anxiety, friendships, sexuality, life changes etc.
