International Week is now underway. We started at lunchtime today with the extremely popular International Food Fair, where a wide selection of delicious food was available to sample from an array of beautifully decorated stalls. We have been able to offer the food fair thanks to the generous support and contributions of parents, carers and students.
Other events taking place this week include a dance show, Karaoke, a fashion show, and Friday’s international themed cultural dress / non-uniform Day, which will raise funds for ‘Action Aid’, a charity which supports period poverty.
British Food Fortnight began on September 20th, an annual event which celebrates local produce. Therefore, this Wednesday our canteen will serve a ‘Best of British’ menu which will include firm favourites such as cottage pie, Cornish pasties and even cheesy bean and sausage rolls.
We wish to extend our congratulations to 2023 Leaver, Sumayah, who has been selected as a contestant on the 2024 ‘Great British Bake Off’. We are sure Sumayah will have contributed to one of our very popular charity cake sales while she was here!
We are fortunate to be situated close to the glaciated landscape of the Lake District where our Year 9 Geography students will be heading on a fieldtrip this week, taking advantage of the beautiful countryside which surrounds us to improve their geographical knowledge.

Pupils at LGGS received international accreditation for their exceptional work in promoting sustainability and raising environmental awareness amongst their peers.
The Eco-Schools programme, established in 1994, is now implemented in over 70 countries worldwide. In 2023-24, more than 1.4 million pupils attended an Eco-School in England.
Our studentsused Eco-Schools’ tried-and-trusted seven-step framework to create positive change. Initially, a pupil-led Eco-Committee was established. This committee took responsibility for spearheading their school’s environmental initiatives, with support from Mrs Verney. They first conducted a thorough review of their school environment and curriculum, before developing a year-long plan of action.
Eco-Schools England Manager Adam Flint said: ‘The Eco-Schools’ Green Flag is an international benchmark that demonstrates a commitment to fighting climate change and high standard of sustainable practice. Students and staff who earn this award deserve recognition for their dedication toward protecting our planet. Every day, they demonstrate that each of us can contribute to making our planet a better, more sustainable place.’
A Former LGGS student is appearing on The Great British Bake Off 2024!
We are proud to share that former LGGS student Sumayah is a contestant on this year’s The Great British Bake Off.
Sumayah took a gap year after leaving us in 2023, and she used that time to do some travelling, volunteering, learning to drive, and appearing on Bake Off! This week she started her deferred entry Dentistry course at the University of Liverpool.
Sumayah and her family would like to give a special thanks to Ms Dobson for acting as a referee during the application process. We are all really looking forward to watching Sumayah on the programme, and wish her the best of luck!
It is always a pleasure to hear from our students after they have left LGGS. Tilly left in 2023 and visited school last week to talk to students about her first year at Cambridge University where she is studying Human, Social and Political Sciences.
Tilly shared her wisdom and insights about the application process and gave our current students the opportunity to engage in a thought-provoking academic conversation.
Following a hugely successful first year, Tilly went on to gain a prestigious internship at the Institute for Economic Affairs.
Careers Advice
All Year 10 students will be receiving careers advice this year thanks to Mrs Wann, our Careers Advisor. Mrs Wann works each Monday at LGGS and Year 10 students have been asked to check their emails first thing each Monday to see if they have an appointment booked. Lunchtime drop-in sessions are also available and Year 11-13 are also able to book follow-up career appointments with Mrs Wann via Mr Green.
Allergy Warning from Impact Food Group
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) have made us aware they are warning people with a peanut allergy to avoid consuming foods that contain, or might contain, mustard, mustard powder, or mustard flour, because these ingredients may have been contaminated with peanuts. These ingredients can be found in food such as dips, sauces, pre-made salads, pasta, curries, cake products, custards and sandwiches.
The FSA is working hard to identify the products which may have been contaminated with these mustard ingredients because of the severity of some allergic reactions to peanuts. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, we wanted to ensure our parents, guardians and school staff are aware of this situation so people with a peanut allergy have up to date information about the potential risk and can take action to keep themselves and their children safe.
At this stage none of our suppliers have recalled any products, however, this is a fast-moving situation and may change as FSA releases further information. Whilst the FSA resolves this situation, we strongly encourage our customers with a peanut allergy to avoid products containing mustard of any kind. If in any doubt, please contact your Kitchen Manager.
A list of food allergens can be obtained from a member of canteen staff within our secondary schools. Please be assured our teams are fully informed of allergens and will be able to answer questions. Year 7 One-to-One Devices
Having their own learning device helps students get seamless access to lesson resources which are designed to make the most of technology. Being competent with technology is increasingly important in the wider world and we want to ensure our students are as prepared as possible for a digital society.
From Monday 30th September, Year 7 will have a one-to-one device in lessons and school every day. They will need support whilst first using them for learning. We expect this to be a slow learning curve and all staff and the computing department are here to support them whilst learning how to use the main Apps.
