Message from the Headteacher

Today, we welcomed Year 11 students, for our Sixth Form Taster Day. We have had more applications than ever to attend the event which presents an excellent opportunity for next year’s students to gain a sense of what our Sixth Form has to offer before the application deadline on Monday 27th January.

January is the time when Year 9 students choose their GCSE options and full details of how the process works are included in the GCSE Options booklet. Heads of department will let students know what a GCSE in their subject entails, which should help Year 9 make a decision. The deadline for options forms to be completed will be on Monday 3rd February 2025.

Positive News

With one day to go, tickets are selling fast for the school production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’.

There will be four performances, from Wednesday 22nd until Saturday 25th January. However, Friday and Saturday are virtually sold out! Tickets can be purchased online via the The Dukes’ website (suitable for all ages).

Year 9 Options

As discussed at last week’s Parents Evening, January is the time when Year 9 students are asked to select their GCSE Options. Students will have been directed to the Options booklet, which they will need to read thoroughly, so that they have a good idea of what each GCSE course has to offer.

Mrs Hutchinson, Assistant Headteacher is responsible for curriculum, data, reporting, and assessment and will meet with all Year 9 students individually to discuss their options. She will be supported by Mrs Singleton, and will advise on the selection process and answer any queries which Year 9 students have.

The deadline for options forms is Monday 3rd February 2025. 

Art Trip to Edinburgh 

Last week, our Year 11 GCSE Art students embarked on an exciting journey to Edinburgh. The day was packed with inspiration as they explored The Portrait Gallery, The National Gallery, and both Modern 1 and Modern 2 galleries.  

Each stop offered a treasure trove of artistic brilliance, helping our students gather ideas and insights for their upcoming Art exams. 

Lancaster Jobs and Careers Fair

There will be a Jobs and Careers Fair at Lancaster Town Hall on Tuesday 28th January which parents and students may wish to attend. You can scan the QR code below to register for the event.

Please note, LGGS students who want to attend should do so after school has finished, as the fair is on until 6:00pm. 

Help Us Improve Our Careers Provision

We would be grateful if parents and carers could complete the short  survey regarding Careers provision, which was circulated via ParentPay last week. Your contribution will inform changes in how career advice is delivered at school.

RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch 

Join the world’s largest garden wildlife survey which takes place between Friday 24th and Sunday 26th January.    

If you would like to take part in the RSPB Garden Birdwatch you will just need to spend an hour watching the birds in your patch (at home or close to home), record which birds land, and also the highest number of each bird species you see at any one time.

Author Jonathan Stroud to visit LGGS

Children’s author, Jonathan Stroud, has won countless awards for his work and will be visiting LGGS on Thursday 23rd January to deliver a session to our Year 8 students, hoping to inspire them with advice and ideas for writing fantasy fiction.

How to deal with online scams

Online scams are a bigger risk now than ever. Parent Zone research found that 96% of young people in the UK aged 13-18 have made an online purchase. Of those young people, 42% had subscribed to something accidentally, been scammed, or lost money in some other way. 

If your child has been the victim of a scam or if you want to find out about preventative measures, you can find useful information in Parent Zone’s ‘How to deal with Online Scams’ guide.

Online guide to outsmart online ads and traps

The AdWise guide ‘Online guide to outsmart online ads and traps’ explains, in simple terms, how companies make money through online advertising and offers tips to young people on navigating marketing traps. It also delves into the online rights that are crucial for young people to be aware of. 

University Lectures

Management and Business Lecture
On Wednesday 22nd January, Dr Michaela Edwards from the University of York will be delivering a talk on Management and Business degrees and careers. The talk is open to Years 10, 11, 12 and 13  students will take place in the Sixth Form centre from 12:30-13:15pm. Students are able to register for the talk and are welcome to bring their lunch. 

Psychology Talk: ‘Do Psychics Hear Voices?’
We welcome a postgraduate researcher in Psychology from Lancaster University, who will give a talk to our Psychology society. The talk starts at 12:45pm and finishes at 13:15pm in Room 30 and everyone is welcome to come and listen.

Chinese New Year

On Wednesday 29th January there will be a special menu on offer in the school canteen in celebration of Chinese New Year.
