Message from the Headteacher

With just over one week to go, tickets are selling fast for the upcoming production of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ at The Dukes theatre. This timeless Disney classic has a cast of over fifty students, a nineteen-piece orchestra, spectacular costumes, and a dazzling set design, all thanks to our students and staff who have been working extremely hard to ensure the school’s production is of its usual high standard.

There will be four performances, from Wednesday 22nd until Saturday 25th January. However, Friday and Saturday night performances are very nearly sold out, so we advise booking tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

The production is suitable for all ages. Tickets can be purchased online via the The Dukes’ website.

We look forward to welcoming Year 11 students from local schools to LGGS for our Sixth Form Taster Day, which will take place on Tuesday 21st January. We have had more applications than ever to attend the event which presenrs an excellent opportunity for next year’s students to gain a sense of what our Sixth Form has to offer before the application deadline on Monday 27th January 2025.

We also look forward to welcoming Year 9 parents and carers to Parents’ Evening this Thursday. The evening provides an invaluable opportunity to discuss student progress and answer any queries you may have.

Positive News

Welcome to the first issue of The LED, an e-zine which has been compiled and edited by our Eco Committee, and which will feature articles about sustainability.

The LED includes articles on The Effects of Medical Waste and Coral Bleaching. It is fascinating to hear how these issues affect our environment, and the publication offers a very informative and interesting read.

Science Drop-In Loyalty Cards

The Sciences are running a loyalty card scheme for students who attend science drop-in sessions. Students will be given a card when they attend their first drop-in and can then take their card along to further sessions to receive a stamp.

Once they have attended and collected 5 stamps, they will be entered into a prize draw (prize to be announced) and will receive 5 achievement / house points! A great incentive.

The Inspector Calls

On Wednesday this week, Year 11 students will be visiting the Lowry at Salford Quays to attend director Stephen Daldry’s multi award-winning production of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls. This will enable students to consolidate their understanding of the GCSE set text before they sit their English Literature exam next term, and is an exciting opportunity to experience a nationally renowned live performance.

Author Jonathan Stroud to visit LGGS

Children’s author, Jonathan Stroud, has won countless awards for his work and will be visiting LGGS on Thursday 23rd January to deliver a session to our Year 8 students. Hoping to inspire them with advice and ideas for writing fantasy fiction.

Jonathan’s latest book The Legendary Scarlett & Browne, is due for release this week and Year 8’s are able to pre-order copies of the Scarlett & Browne series at a discounted price via Parent Pay. The books will be distributed at next week’s event.

We would like to recommend Family Lives website to parents and carers. The website offers free advice, a helpline, and parenting courses covering a wide range of topics. We have highlighted a few of the courses below, which you may feel would be relevant to your situation and may, therefore, support your needs.

Coping with teens: As well as information and advice which can be found on the website, there is an online course for parents, carers and other family members who are looking to strengthen the bond with their teen and gain an insight into this age and stage of development. Online activity and setting boundaries to monitor your child’s online activity

Online activity and setting boundaries to monitor your child’s online activity: We understand that there are some LGGS students who are engaged in online activity between the hours of 11pm and 6am, and therefore must have limited or disturbed sleep. Ensuring all phones and devices are kept out of bedrooms or access to the internet is restricted overnight is strongly encouraged.

Chinese New Year Recipe Book

To celebrate Chinese New Year on 29th January, the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion team are creating a recipe booklet which will consist of traditional Chinese dishes that are enjoyed during the festive period.

The team have invited students from Years 7 to 13 to contribute ideas which will be shared with the whole school community for us to enjoy.
