Message from the Headteacher

Firstly I would like to express my gratitude for the support with student led charity fundraising. We have recently seen students raising money for Unicef and Children in Need and I know there are further plans to continue to try and support a wide range of good causes.

As we head towards the festive period I wanted to let you know that we will be running our annual festive jumper day as well as our annual Elf Run. We will confirm dates and arrangements in next week’s update.

This year’s edition of The Chronicle is nearly ready for publication! For those new to the school, The Chronicle is the LGGS school magazine, run by a team of Year 12 students as part of their enrichment programme. Please remember to order your copy by paying in advance on Parent-pay.

Students and staff head out to Germany on Wednesday this week to take part in our first exchange of the year. We hope to be able to post updates on their trip on our social media channels during the week.

We hope you can join us on Thursday evening for the Autumn Concert at Ashton Hall. The concert features LGGS choirs, Music Ensembles and the Joint Lancaster Schools’ Orchestra. Ticket details can be found below:

Children in Need – £379.50 raised

Well done to the Charity Team for organising the well-loved, annual Children in Need event.

Thanks also to everyone who supported the Team by wearing Pudsey Bear ears or spotted accessories.

An impressive £379.50 has been raised so far towards this fundraising initiative and you can still donate online via ParentPay.

Climate Change Awareness


Mr Rogers, supported by students from the Conservation Club which he runs, delivered an Assembly to Year 7 today. Their aim was to raise awareness of Climate Change and the work discussed at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as COP28. COP28, the 28th conference of its kind, will be held from 30 November until 12 December.

Mr Rogers also wished to promote the Conservation Club to Year 7. The Club offers a wonderful opportunity to discuss important issues which the students who may then promote throughout school.

NHS 350 Science Fair

Last week Year 10 spent the afternoon at the University of Cumbria learning about the wide range of Careers at the NHS 350 event. It was great to see so many students getting involved and thinking about potential careers.

New concussion guidance

Players, parents, coaches, teachers and administrators are now advised to read the guidance and familiarise themselves with the new Government guidance which can be found here.

In summary the guidelines set out steps to improve understanding and awareness of the prevention and treatment of concussion in grassroots sport. They also include a recommendation to call NHS 111 within 24 hours of a potential concussion, to rest and sleep as much as needed for the first 24 to 48 hours and avoid using devices which involve screen time.

‘If in doubt, sit them out’ is the strapline, making clear no-one should return to sport within 24 hours of a suspected concussion.

Please make sure you:
RECOGNISE the signs of concussion;
REMOVE anyone suspected of being concussed immediately and;
RETURN safely to daily activity, education/work and, ultimately, sport.

At LGGS, students are advised to inform staff about any head injuries that occur both inside and outside of school. If something happens within school – the student will be given a ‘head’ card to carry with them which informs them and others of the various side effects and actions, if needed. A phone call will also be made home to inform parents/carers of the incident and the actions as a result. 

Holiday Activities and Food Programme

If you are eligible for benefits-related free school meals, you can get a place on the Holiday Activities and Food Programme (HAF)!
This takes place during the Christmas Holidays for 4 days (most likely taking place between the
2nd and 5th January). You can check out further details on the website for your district.

You will get a chance to:
Take part in activities, sports and games
Meet up with friends and make new ones
Plus have a tasty, healthy meal
