Message from the Headteacher

Our students are quickly settling back into the routine of school life.

Sports Clubs have already started back this week (see the timetable below) and we will soon be able to keep you informed about the full range of extra-curricular activities on offer to our students this academic year.

The 11+ Admission Tests will be taking place on Saturday 28th September 2024, for those wishing to enter the school in Year 7 (September 2025). Should you be considering applying for a place at Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School, a reminder that the closing date to apply for the tests will be at noon this Friday, 13th September 2024 and you can register online.

Last year we welcomed back many past pupils who kindly offered career advice to current Year 10-13 students. To start us off this year, on Wednesday 18 September we will be joined by Tilly Middlehurst, who left LGGS in 2023 to study Human, Social and Political Science at Cambridge University. Tilly will talk about the application process for Cambridge University and life as a university student in Cambridge.

Tonight on ‘North West Tonight’
Last week we mentioned Marianna Ward’s success as winner of the BBC Regional (North West) ‘Young Reporter of the Year 2024‘ competition. You can read about the work Marianna has been carrying out on the BBC’s Website.
Marianna will be appearing on this evening’s ‘BBC North West Tonight’ at 6:30pm so remember to tune in and support her.

Blood Brothers

Last Thursday, our Drama students travelled to Blackpool to attend a performance of Blood Brothers, a musical which is part of our their GCSE curriculum studies. Written by Willy Russell, it explores the lives of twins Mickey and Edward who are separated at birth and brought up in different social environments.

​Set during the 1960s, Mickey lives with his single mother, Mrs Johnstone, and his other siblings. However, persuaded to part with one of the twins, Mrs Johnstone’s other son, Edward, is brought up by her employer, Mrs Lyons. 

​At the age of 7, the boys befriend each other and eventually become blood brothers. However, as they become young adults who compete for the affection of a friend, the huge difference in their social backgrounds pulls them apart and eventually leads to their tragic deaths. ​

The musical draws the audience’s attention to the detrimental effect that social inequality can have on people’s lives.
The students feel they have benefitted from seeing a live performance, which will give them added confidence when it comes to writing about the topic.

Safely dropping pupils off to school

Please can I remind parents and carers to avoid parking on the zig zag lines when dropping students off to school or collecting them at the end of the day. Not only is it an offence, it is also dangerous to children who may be obscured as a result when they attempt to cross the road.

We would ask everyone who drops their child(ren) off at school to please adhere to these rules. We appreciate that everyone rushes around in the morning but to spare a little extra time and drop your child at a safe place, could, effectively, save a life or injury.

Dinner Money Account

Please would parents and carers check and top-up ‘dinner money’ balances via ParentPay at least once a week to prevent the account running into deficit. Please also remind your child to look after their dinner money / printing card (ideally stored on their lanyard) so that it is kept safely with them at all times. If a card is lost, replacement cards may be requested from the Canteen or Finance Office at a cost of £3.00.​

We would like to remind families that students may only buy food from the canteen if they have credit on their ParentPay ‘dinner money’ account. A lunchtime meal deal costs £2.50, or individually priced items can be purchased up to the value available on their account. Students registered for Free School Meals are provided with a daily allowance to cover a meal deal, or items up to a value of £2.50 per day. ​

Free porridge and toppings are available to all students each morning, regardless of the account balance. However, if students choose to use their allowance at breakfast or breaktime, they may find that there are insufficient funds to cover their lunch. Therefore, we encourage parents and carers to discuss with your child how best to manage spending throughout the week.

16-19 Bursary Fund Application Deadline

The 16-19 Bursary Fund is a nationally funded scheme, aimed at helping young people facing financial hardship to stay in full-time education. For eligible students, the Fund can help towards the cost of essential course related costs such as travel to school, equipment, books, trips, and attending university or job interviews. It applies to expenses during the current academic year.​

The deadline for applications is Monday 16th September, and a link to the application form has been circulated via the weekly Student Bulletin. If you need advice about applying, please get in touch with the Sixth Form team.

​Important: Students who received bursary fund grants in 2023-24 will need to re-apply for the 2024-25 academic year
