Message from the Headteacher

Welcome back to the summer term. I hope all students and families enjoyed a restful and refreshing Easter break and are returning ready for the exciting opportunities ahead.

Before the holidays, our school community ended the term with many events. We saw students engaging brilliantly in a wide range of activities, including the Year 12 UCAS event, Bronze DofE training day, Year 12 Biosciences trip, our Interhouse Netball competitions, SFLT Handover event, and CCF Easter Camp. My thanks once again to everyone involved for their enthusiasm, commitment and teamwork throughout a very busy term.

As we begin this new term, we look forward to the Great Debate Cabinet Meeting and our Sicily Information Evening. Our Year 7 students head to the YMCA Lakeside Trip, whilst we welcome our German Exchange students. Later in the month, Year 9 students will take part in CCF Navy Sailing in Southport offering yet another valuable opportunity for challenge and growth.

Student News – Welcome To Our New SFLT

Welcome to our new Sixth Form Leadership Team who will be leading not only within the Sixth Form but also inspiring the students in younger years.

Members of our core Sixth Form Leadership Team work with the School Council as well as their Sixth Form peers, each leading a team of students from across the year groups, developing projects in line with our school’s core values and ensuring that all our students have the opportunity to be part of shaping the direction of the school.

Sixth Form students also hold key roles in leading our four Houses and as members of our School Council, Eco-Committee and Wellbeing Group. They also run a wide range of societies as well as the Year 7 Mentors programme, helping the younger students settle in when they first join us and encouraging them to make the most of everything that our school offers.

Year 9 Exhibition Evening

On behalf of the English Department, I would like to invite you to our inaugural Year 9 Exhibition Evening on Thursday 23rd April. The evening will run from 6pm – 7pm and will be an opportunity for you to peruse a range of incredible artefacts that our students have produced as part of their Extended Reading Project. During the evening, a group of students will also be presenting a short, pre-prepared talk on their individual projects.

As you are no doubt aware, reading for pleasure amongst teens has been on the decline; in November 2024, The National Literacy Trust declared the issue at crisis point following their annual survey that revealed only one in three 8- to 18-year-olds stated they enjoyed reading in their free time. At school we have introduced the Choosing Literature and Independently Reading for Enjoyment initiative, and the Extended Reading Project is a key component of this. Over the course of this year, every student in Year 9 has chosen at least one book to read and undertaken a research question in relation to this. In the last two weeks of the Spring term, all students have presented their findings to their peers. The exhibition is to both showcase and celebrate their efforts, whilst inspiring them to continue reading for pleasure as they begin their GCSE studies.

Water Safety

We will be highlighting the importance of water safety in school over the coming weeks. You may wish to make time to talk about the risk of open water with your child. Now we coming into the warmer months, it is important to reshare water safety messages. As temperatures rise, more people head to the water to cool off — but higher heat means higher risk. The Royal Life Saving Society have a host of advice and tips for keeping safe whilst enjoying the water.

Future First Alumnae Network

We have a growing Alumnae network and, as a reminder, you are able to keep in touch with school, each other, and receive our termly Alumnae newsletter by signing up to Future First.

Our Alumnae also provide support to our current students through talks, mentoring or offering work experience. Further along your career path, this may be something that you wish to be involved with.

Mental Health Support for Young People

There is a wealth of useful information from Young Minds to help parents and carers understand more about their young person’s mental health. Find the right help for them or hear from other parents who’ve been there.
