Dear Parents and Carers, 
Welcome to our latest Careers Newsletter. It has been a very busy and exciting term for students across all year groups, with a wide range of opportunities designed to inspire, inform and prepare them for their future pathways. Thank you for your continued support.

Year 7

National Careers Week Assembly 

An introductory talk to raise awareness of future career pathways and the world of work delivered by Helen Tebay “the Sales Lady”.

    Gender Stereotypes in Careers Session

    Ash from Lancaster and Morecambe College delivered a focused session exploring gender stereotypes, encouraging pupils to challenge assumptions and consider a wide range of career options regardless of gender.

    Year 8

    Careers learning is embedded through ongoing Personal Development curriculum and form-time activities, building early awareness of skills, interests and future pathways. 

    Year 9

    Careers lessons on Finance 

    Dedicated lessons covering career pathways, employability skills and an introduction to financial education have been delivered in the Personal Development Curriculum. 

    HSC National careers week talk 

    An employer-led talk delivered by Ashey Walker from HSC advice (Link to website/logo, highlighting local labour market information and career opportunities and pathways. 

    Heysham power station STEM trip 

    A group of Year 9 students will be representing LGGS when they attend a STEM workshop based at Heysham Power Station. We look forward to hearing how the day went. 

    Year 10

    Megaday event 

    LGGS students came first and second in the recent Megaday cyber event held at Lancaster and Morecambe College. They learnt more about digital careers as well as developing an understanding of What Lancaster and Moreacambe College can offer regarding post-16 qualifications. 

    Work Experience update 

    It has been great to see the wide range of placements students have found for their work experience in June. We look forward to hearing about their excperiences later in the summer term. 

    Year 11

    Construction Industry Visit – Northstone 
    In January, a group of Year 11 students visited the Northstone construction site to explore careers in construction and civil engineering. They had a tour of the showhouse and a talk from Chrissie about the range of careers within the construction industry.

    Future Skills Questionnaires 
    All Year 11 students completed the Future Skills questionnaire this term. The results will support the school in designing future careers activities that target the skills and opportunities our young people most want to develop. 

    Year 12

    Year 12 Work Experience 

    Year 12 work experience will take place from Monday 11th May to Friday 15th May. Further details have been shared with students and parents. We appreciate your support in helping them to secure placements. 

    Year 12 have continued to access talks from LGGS alumni who have returned to share their experiences of life after sixth form, including well-attended sessions on MFL at Oxford and York Universities, and the BAE Undergraduate Apprenticeship programme. 

    Our students are beginning to consider their post-sixth form options, with 120 of our Year 12 students recently attending the UK University and Apprenticeship Search Fair at Lancaster University, whilst 30 year 12 students also enjoyed finding out more about applications to a competitive university during the Cambridge North West Conference at Haydock Park in March, where they were able to hear from admissions tutors, experience mock interviews and taster lectures in subjects of their choice. 

    Appeal to Parents & Carers 

    We are always looking to expand our network of employers and supporters and warmly welcome parents and carers who may be able to support careers education in school. This could include: 

    Delivering talks or presentations, taking part in mock interviews, speaking in assemblies or 

    sharing your career journey or sector insight. Anyone who may be able to support with this should contact Mr Green out careers lead on d.green@lggs.lancs.sch.uk 

    Work Experience Opportunities Needed 

    If you, your workplace or someone you know may be able to offer a placement to either a Year 10 student (3-day placement in June) or a Year 12 student (5-day placement in May), please get in touch.
