I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year and hope you are feeling rested ready for the Spring Term.
Towards the end of last term, we celebrated the achievements of our students at the annual Awards Evening which was held at Lancaster University’s Great Hall. It was wonderful to welcome our alumnae who, alongside current students, received their certificates and awards. The evening was made even more memorable by guest speakers and alumnae Rebecca Novell and Chloe Shepherd, who shared their experiences.
We attended the whole school Carol Service at Lancaster Priory with performances from our wonderful school choir, talented singers and musicians and Poet Laureates.
Year 13 mock exams begin this week, which offer the opportunity to test knowledge, experience an exam environment and identify which areas require development in preparation for summer exams. I am sure as parents and carers you will be doing your utmost to support Year 13 and Year 11 students, as will our teaching staff, and should you need to discuss anything, we are always at hand to offer advice.
We welcome two new members of staff to LGGS this term. Mr Troughton joins us as Head of Business and Computing asMiss Clapham’s maternity cover, and Mrs Norman is our new Head of Modern Foreign Languages. We hope you get a chance to meet them soon.

Dick Whittington and His Cat Congratulations to LGGS students Isla, Scarlett, Amy, Lyra, Melody and Violet who starred in Dick Whittington and His Cat at the Grand Theatre. The pantomime was Directed by LGGS alumna, Cheryl Hutton who is pictured below with the students.
Awards Evening at Lancaster University It was a privilege to welcome back former LGGS students, Rebecca Novell and Chloe Shepherd, as a guest speakers at our Awards Evening in December.
The audience was deeply moved by Rebecca’s inspiring journey from her early days at LGGS to her current role leading Refugee Integration for Lancashire. Rebecca emphasised the importance of small acts of kindness and their significant impact and shared how unexpected events shaped her career, reminding our students that the future holds endless possibilities.
Chloe shared her journey of breaking into the world of finance. She emphasised the importance of resilience, authenticity, empathy, and emotional understanding in leadership. Chloe has been shortlisted for various leadership and rising star awards and sits on the board of a social mobility charity. She is also a champion and advocate for diversity and inclusion.

LGGS Science department has received delivery of pink Bunsen burners! The Bunsen burners were purchased during the autumn term in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month and for every Bunsen Burner which was purchased throughout this month, 100% of the proceeds were donated to Breast Cancer Now, the UK’s leading breast cancer research charity.

‘An Inspector Calls’ at the Lowry
GCSE students will be visiting the Lowry at Salford Quays this Wednesday (Year 10) and next Wednesday (Year 11) to attend director Stephen Daldry’s multi award-winning production of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls. This will enable students to consolidate their understanding of the GCSE set text and is an exciting opportunity to experience a nationally renowned live performance.
Careers Fair at Carnforth
It was lovely to meet Year 9 and Year 11 pupils from Carnforth at their Careers’ Fair during December and talk to them about our Sixth Form.
Whilst she was there, Mrs Whitehouse bumped into Maddie, LGGS Leaver 2018, who qualified in Veterinary Science last year and was talking to students about careers in animal care.
Health Needs Assessment
Year 9 students will be asked to complete a Health Needs Assessment questionnaire during this Thursday’s Form period.
Our form tutors have delivered a PowerPoint explaining to students what this involves. The questionnaire has been created by the school nursing services (school health team) working with colleagues in the Lancashire County Council (LCC) Public Health and School Improvement Services.
The School Nurse, Louise Mapp, will be in school at lunchtime on Friday 10th January and can be found at the Main School’s basement office. Students do not need to book an appointment to attend, they can just turn up. The School Nurse drop in is available to all LGGS students.
These sessions are confidential and are available to provide advice and support for young people with any health issues, including both physical and emotional aspects of health. Should you have any further queries about school nurse provision or availability please contact Mrs Roberts or any other member of the pastoral team.

Having a conversation with our Counsellor could help you to manage something that is worrying you and to place things in perspective. Place2Be offers a 15-minute session at break or lunchtime. It would be advisable to book an appointment, ideally one day in advance of your meeting.
