Message from the Headteacher

As we approach the end of another term and year, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your ongoing support and collaboration. It has been a privilege to witness the growth and achievements of our students during these past weeks.

This term has been filled with academic successes, creative endeavours and personal growth. Notable events have included the amazing International Week, Performing Arts Festival and the Autumn Concert.

We are welcoming last year’s Year 11 and 13 leavers this evening as we host our annual awards evening (Speech Night) We then have our annual Carol Concert at The Priory taking place on Thursday. This is a fitting end to an incredible term.

Our termly newsletter will be out later this week.

Please note that we will close for the holiday on Friday 22nd December 2023 at 1:30pm (please note the difference in time to previous updates). We will reopen on Monday 8th January 2024.

Festive Countdown

Our LGGS Festive Countdown continues this week and you can keep up to date with all that is happening, and all the different charities we are supporting, by looking at the calendar below.

Olive Branch Food Bank Donations

Sixth Form students have donated and organised a collection of delicious festive treats for the Olive Branch Foodbank.  The students contributed a wide range of items, from tea and hot chocolate to large boxes of chocolate and biscuits.
Foodbank collection has been a great opportunity for us to provide vital support for those in need during the festive period. The collection has brought our sixth form community closer together and reminds us, just how far a simple act of kindness can go.

The LGGS 4K run took place on Friday, and offered students the choice to either compete with LGGS colleagues on a route which began at school, or by organising their own festive running or walking challenge outside of school.
Whether students, families and friends chose a race, parkrun or to walk up a hill, taking part purely involved wearing something festive.

This year’s Elf Run was once again well attended – thank you everyone. So far we have raised over £200 for St John’s Hospice.

It’s not too late to compete or donate as the event takes place throughout December!


If our students thought they had seen the end of Elves at LGGS for the season … they were mistaken. An Elf Hunt took place at school today. Some of the elves bore an uncanny resemblance to many of our LGGS teachers!

Big Christmas Day Out

Our Jazz Band and Senior Choir entertained the crowds at the Big Christmas Day Out on Sunday. Taking place in Williamson Park our students provided some additional Christmas cheer to families attending.

Careers

The RAF came to speak to our Year 11 students last week. They talked about the wide range of careers available as well as answering a whole host of questions about life in the RAF.

Lancashire Forum also came in to run a ‘Find an Apprenticeship’ session. You can find out more information on their website and search for available apprenticeships through the Gov.uk website.

Positive News

Jess, Year 11, has been awarded a ‘Skills for Justice’, Level 2 Certificate in Fire and Rescue Services in the Community. 

She has gained this qualification through working hard each week at Morecambe Fire Cadets over a period of two years, where the Cadets undertake practical team working drills with firefighting equipment, alongside coursework and assisting at community events. 

Jess is currently in her third and final year of Fire Cadets working towards a ‘Duke of Cornwall’ award.

Congratulations to Isabel, Year 10 who was awarded Outstanding Junior Runner by her fell running club Helm Hill Runners. She was selected for this prestigious award out of hundreds of junior members, for her racing performance, commitment to training and the range and scope of her running. She also picked up an U15 award in the club championships and is a member of The Helm Hill U15 female English Fell Running Champions 2023.

The Chronicle

The Chronicle is our annual School magazine, which celebrates events throughout the academic year. Sales began on Friday and as you can see staff and students were enthralled by its content. There is still a chance to buy a copy as there are a few remaining.

They go on sale in the Main Hall on Wednesday 20th, priced £5 (cash only).

Personal Safety

Recently we have been made aware of a very small number of concerning incidents in the town center, fortunately these are rare, but it does serve as an important reminder about taking steps to keep safe when going into town.

We have shared reminders to all students about personal safety when in public areas, action they can take and the need to report any concerns. It is a timely reminder for the need for everyone to be aware of their own personal safety in public spaces and we would appreciate you revisiting this with your child too.

Mental Health Support during the holidays

We know that some students find the holiday period challenging for their wellbeing, as they lose the structure and routine of school so we have put together a selection of resources for any student who is struggling with their mental health and we have told the students about this. We have also reminded them that teachers and support staff will not be checking their school emails during the holidays.

Kooth is also at hand during the winter holiday period if you, or someone you know needs extra mental wellbeing support during the holiday season.
