Weekly Update

Message from the Headteacher

It’s been a busy and exciting time in school. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have now finished their exams, and we’re really proud of the way they’ve handled themselves. We’re looking forward to celebrating their achievements at their results days in August. Year 10 are currently in the middle of their mock exams and continuing to work hard.

A quick reminder that this Thursday is our Open Evening. School will close at 2.25pm so staff can prepare, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new families into the building.

Across school, students have been engaging well with lessons and enrichment activities as we move towards the end of term. It’s been lovely to see so many taking part in clubs, sports, and wider opportunities.

We’re also preparing to welcome both our internal and external Year 11 students for our Sixth Form Induction Day, which is always an exciting step for those beginning the next stage of their journey.

Thank you for your continued support as we head into the final stretch of the year.

Warm wishes,
Mr C Beard

Uniform Expectations

Due to the anticipated heatwave this week, we are making temporary adjustments to our uniform expectations. For this week, wearing a tie and blazer will be optional.

From tomorrow, students may choose to wear their PE kit if they would find this more comfortable. Please note that lanyards must still be worn at all times, and trainers are only permitted when students are in full PE kit.

Thank you for your support in helping students stay comfortable and focused during the warmer weather, we anticipate that uniform should be back to normal next week.

Student News

A huge well done to Rowan and Iris in Year 9 who organised a jumble sale and raised £40 for St John’s Hospice!

Do you have a good news stories about your child that we can share? We’re always delighted to highlight our students’ successes, so feel free to email information and pictures to commsteam@lggs.lancs.sch.uk

Careers Update

Year 9 Visit to Heysham Power Station

In May, a group of Year 9 students visited Heysham Power Station to take part in a range of activities linked to women in engineering. They heard inspiring talks from women working in a variety of roles across the site and gained valuable insight into careers in the sector. Students also took part in a competition to design a new power station, with results due to be announced in July. It was an engaging and inspiring experience for everyone involved.

Work Experience Success for Year 10 and Year 12

Our Year 12 students completed five days of work experience in May, followed by Year 10 who undertook three days in June. Students secured a wide range of placements and received very positive feedback from employers. We would like to thank all parents who supported students in arranging placements and extend our gratitude to the many employers who hosted them. Well done to all students for representing the school so positively.

Safety Message: Viral Trend Risks Severe Burns

A recent viral trend is encouraging children to microwave squishy silicone toys in order to make them softer and more pliable. The toy feels cool to the touch after microwaving, but bursts when squeezed, spraying boiling material on their hands, neck and face. It is a serious risk and we ask that you please discuss this with your children where necessary.

Supporting Students through the Exam Period

Young Minds have also included a specific section on the exam period, which can be found here: Exam time

Exam season can be a stressful time for many students, with pressure to perform potentially taking a toll on their wellbeing. While encouraging students to work hard remains important, it’s equally vital that they feel supported throughout the process.

The NHS has put together a helpful guide for parents on supporting their children during exams, with practical advice on building healthy routines, spotting signs of stress and creating a positive environment at home.

You can also find advice in the NHS Education Hub below.
