Weekly Update

Message from the Headteacher

It has been a very busy half term, especially for our Year 11 and Year 13 students who have had their mock exams. We are pleased with the commitment they have all shown and appreciate there is still much more work to be done, but the mocks will help students identify where they need to improve or if they are on the right track.

Our assemblies this week are covering the topic of Safer Internet Day which takes place in February of each year to raise awareness of a safer and better internet for all, and especially for children and young people.

A quick reminder that strike action is due to disrupt train travel until Tuesday 6 February 2024, please continue to make alternative arrangements for travelling to school.

I hope you all have a relaxing break, enjoy a few pancakes (Chinese New Year and Shrove Tuesday), and we shall look forward to welcoming you back to school on Monday 19th February.

Meanwhile, as you can see from the images below, our Year 10 and Year 12 students are having a wonderful time during their Spanish Exchange visit.

Spanish Exchange

Our exchange students have been on a guided tour of the Roman town Sagunto, including a visit to the amphitheatre and castle, learning all about the religious history of Spain, and the coexistence of Jewish, Muslim and Catholic populations between the 12th and 16th centuries. 

The trip will give the students an opportunity to improve their language skills as well as sampling the food and culture of their hosts. As you can see, everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, getting to know their Spanish Exchange partners plus enjoying glorious sunshine.

Positive News

Gymnastics Competition Wednesday 31st January  

On Wednesday the following pupils competed in the LGGS gymnastics competition: 

Martha, Phoebe & Gabriella / Lucie, Lacey, Imogen, Immy, Daniela & Imogen / Myrto, Andrea, Hanying & Sally / Evie & Sylvie / Eloise & Jessica / Lydia & Matilda

Having independently choreographed their routines over the past half-term, all the performances were of a supremely high standard. The competition was judged by Millie from ‘City of Lancaster Gymnastics Club’. The overall champions were Lucie, Lacey, Imogen, Immy, Daniela & Imogen. Congratulations go to them and to all our amazing gymnasts.

Parents, carers and friends will have an opportunity to see many of their performances at the ‘Gymnastics and Dance Showcase’ which will take place at school on 26th March.  

We have two more events lined up this week: Year 7 and 8 compete in the ‘Under 13 District Football Tournament’ at Morecambe Bay Academy on Wednesday 7th February and Year 7 and 8 ‘Indoor Athletics Competition’
will be held at Lancaster and Morecambe College on Thursday 8th. 

A fantastic Under 15 Football Tournament at Bay Leadership Academy last Friday saw LGGS finish 2nd overall with many brilliant performances from all players. Well done team LGGS!

Well done to Year 7 student Hannah who is this week’s ‘Artist of the Week’.

Bar Mock Trial

The Bar Mock Trial competition helps young people understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives and to gain an insight into how the legal justice system. This year’s trial took place online, rather in a courtroom, and our students did us really proud. Although we weren’t the overall winners, our LGGS team prepared excellent legal arguments and won all their rounds. Well done!

Night Owl – CCF Competition

On Friday 26th January our Combined Cadet Force students took part in Night Owl, a joint army venture between LRGS and LGGS. The army cadets spent the evening carrying out a variety of tasks in a wooded area to achieve a win over the enemy. The cadets were split into two groups, the Friendly and the Enemy and the aim of the competition is for the Friendly team to complete a variety of tasks, whilst the Enemy team hunt, and disrupt the Friendly team’s activities. 
The end goal is to eliminate the Enemy base without being caught. It was all good fun working as a team towards different objectives, we then cooked food on camp stoves and practiced night time navigation skills! 
Everyone is looking forward to next year’s competition.

Chicago – Extra date added

Due to popular demand, an extra performance has been added, Wednesday 28th February, to our school’s production of Chicago at Nuffield Theatre, Lancaster University – tickets are available online.

Rehearsals are well under way, as you can see from the images below. Only 31/2 weeks to go!

Girl Guide International Trip

Year 8 student Isla has taken the initiative to organise a bake sale this lunch time, which proved very popular with students and staff alike! Isla is raising funds to take part in an international trip with her Girl Guide group which aims to visit Sweden, to aid the local community there. We wish her success in achieving her goal.
