Last week we welcomed Year 11 students from local schools who slotted seamlessly, with our Year 11 pupils, into Sixth Form life at our Taster Day. There was excellent interaction, enthusiasm and teamwork from all the students, who engaged with the wide range of subjects we offer – it was amazing to see how much everyone enjoyed themselves. We have already had plenty of really positive feedback. Thank you.

Saturday 27th January is Holocaust Memorial Day and some of our sixth formers have prepared a presentation ‘The Fragility of Freedom’ which will be delivered to all our students over the coming week.
It was a real pleasure to welcome Year 11 to our Sixth Form Taster Day and for the students to experience what a wonderful environment we offer. We hope it also showed how well we support all our Sixth Form students and how well they support each other.

Holocaust Memorial Day
27 January is the day Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp, was liberated and our Sixth Form Religious Studies students will be sharing a presentation with all our students this week to raise awareness of the importance of freedom.
The theme for the memorial day is ‘The Fragility of Freedom’ as freedom is a human right but one of the first things taken away by genocide and tyranny.
Holocaust Memorial Day is a time when we seek to learn the lessons of the past and recognise that genocide does not just take place on its own – it is a steady process which can begin if discrimination, racism and hatred are not checked and prevented.

Lancaster University French Cinema Day
On 11 January A-Level French students travelled to Lancaster University for a day of complete immersion in French cinema. The students watched and worked on two films featuring; the 1980 film ‘Le Dernier Métro‘ directed by François Truffaut, and a more modern production by François Ozon entitled ‘Potiche’. These films dealt with the socio-historical contexts of Occupation and Resistance in France during World War II, and the wave of strikes and protests which took hold of France during an economic crisis and a period of women’s liberation in the late 70s. The films enabled students to enrich their cultural and linguistic knowledge whilst experiencing a little flavour of what it is like being a languages undergraduate at Lancaster University.
Chinese Club at Lancaster University
20 students from Years 7 and 8 are taking part in a term-long after-school club provided by students from Lancaster University, giving them the opportunity to learn all about Chinese language and culture.
International Fiction Book Club
The book club is run by Year 12 student, Gloria, as part of her Reading Ambassador personal project.
Students from Years 7-13 meet each half-term in the Library to discuss a book which has been translated into English. Each term we choose a Key Stage 3, 4 and 5 text which will give students an insight into the different social, cultural and historical background of the country in which the book was originally published. International Fiction Book Club (IFBC) is open all and is a fantastic way to broaden your knowledge of language, history and culture through reading.
This term we are reading Journey to the Centre of the Earthby Jules Verne for Key Stage 3 and for Key Stage 4&5 we have selected In the Sea There Are Crocodiles by Fabio Geda – translated from Italian.

Uniform (Year 7 – 11)
Following the messages sent last half term, we see most students coming to school in the correct uniform. We wanted to pass on our thanks for your ongoing support with this.
We have continued reminding all students about the expectations around their uniform since returning this year and we wanted to let you know that we are starting to contact parents if there are repeated breaches of the policy with a view to working together to resolve any issues in the small minority of cases. We will also follow our behaviour policy where necessary.
Where possible, students will be given the opportunity to correct their uniform in the morning. We do have spare uniform available for students should they forget or need to borrow the correct item.
We do also have our uniform exchange and details can be found on our website. Please contact us if there are any financial barriers to having the correct uniform.
As a reminder I have copied some key points from our Uniform and Appearance Code below;
One set of plain ear studs in the lobe of the ear is allowed. No other Jewellery is permitted
Skirts should not be rolled up and should touch the top of the knee when stood up
Shirts should be tucked in and fastened at the top button
Shoes should be plain black and flat healed. No boots or trainers are allowed
I would appreciate your continued support with making sure that your child understands this.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to remind you that we will be moving to a common uniform policy for Year 7 to 11 from September. This will mean that all students will need to wear a school blazer with an optional jumper and that all students will need to wear a navy-blue pleated skirt or trousers. The full details can be found in our uniform policy on our website. I will send additional reminders in the summer term.
We remain committed to keeping uniform costs down as much as possible and will continue to support families where necessary.
Information – Edibles
Our local Police Partnerships Officer has recently made us aware of a growing concern around Edibles.
Edibles are food products that may contain cannabis and other drugs. They can be available in many forms but often made to look like normal sweets and specifically targeted at young people.
They usually contain a number of chemicals, many of which are harmful and controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act, including tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
We will be including this topic as part of our normal personal development programme.
